Traditionally, among the griots of West Africa, it is the men who handle the instruments while the women sing.

But Sona Jobarteh wanted to break with this tradition, so she asked her father to teach her to play the kora. Today, she is the first woman to achieve international success with this instrument.

After more than seven years in the making, the long-awaited second album from kora virtuoso Sona Jobarteh is finally out. Badinyaa Kumoo reveals a new depth in its composition and bears witness to the ground she has covered since her debut, Fasiya, in 2011. The kora, a 21-string West African harp, is traditionally played by male griots or hereditary musicians, but never by women.

Sona Jobarteh has decided to change the rules. The artist, much in demand at major world music and jazz festivals, plays with an elegant and complex musicality. Leading an experienced four-piece band, she has won over audiences around the world. Her captivating voice and catchy melodies convey messages about the values she defends: cultural identity, love and respect, while remaining totally faithful to her Gambian heritage.

Vocals and Kora: Sona Jobartheh / Bass: Andi Mc Lean / Percussion: Mouhamadou Sarr / Guitar: Eric Appapoulay / Drums: Westley Joseph / Balafon and percussion: Sidiki Jobarteh / Photographer: Rob O’Connor
